Is keywords earlier in a URL better for SEO?

Is keywords earlier in a URL better for SEO?

Is placing a keyword earlier in a URL better for SEO? For example, is this
better
http://www.domain.com/some-shampoo-brand
than
http://www.domain.com/products/some-shampoo-brand
if my goal is to rank well for "some shampoo brand?"

  1. The order in which keywords appear in a URL matters. It's been theorized that keywords appearing earlier in a URL have more weight. At minimum, it's been confirmed by Matt Cutts that "after about five" words, the weight of a keyword dwindles. Source: https://northcutt.com/wr/google-ranking-factors/
